"The ability to tie biometrics to an access control and, more than anything, a card system that allows you to store data, has actually increased the security level over what access control can provide," says Rick Heimann, project manager, access control, Texas Instruments RFid Systems. Texas Instruments Radio Frequency Identification (TI-RFid) Systems' 13.56 MHz reader and card security systems for access control offer at-the-door, read/write programmability, interoperability across all suppliers and applications and multiple card reading capability. With more than 2,000 bits of data, the cards hold 50 times more data than traditional 125 kHz solutions, according to Heimann."In essence, you carry the data of an individual on a card, feed that information into a combination unit or two separate units joined, and the RFid would extract the information off the card, transfer it to the biometric reader, and through a biometric technique, the person's information would be in place and a match could be done.It has increased the level of security to a fairly significant degree," Heimann explains.
