Dr. Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek

Created by Dr. Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek, Spertus Museum Senior Curator of Judaica and Chief Curator of the Jewish Museum of Vienna, the unique display examines "cross-cultural influences on the development of Jewish objects, as well as ethical and historical issues surrounding the acquisition and display of culturally sensitive collections."

Heimann-Jelinek's personal touch shouldn't be missed.

"Stereotypes and clichés are an integral part of our perception, shaping our image of ourselves and others as well as our sense of belonging to a distinct group or nation apart from others," said exhibit co-curator Dr. Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek."At the same time, they can serve as a breeding ground for racist ideologies.The exhibition aims to raise consciousness about how we interpret and evaluate with every glance, and how we need to question our ‘point of view' over and over again."

Heimann-Jelinek, senior curator for the Spertus Museum and chief curator of the Jewish Museum Vienna, curated the exhibit with Hannes Sulzenbacher, a curatorial specialist in Austria.

Other anticipated speakers at the conference include Eleonora Bergman (Warsaw), Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett (New York University), Sabine Offe, Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek (Vienna Jewish Museum), Cilly Kugelmann (Berlin Jewish Museum), Vasyl Rasevych, Shelley Salamensky, Michał Szulc, Sofiya Grachova, Sergey Kravtsov, Rudolf Klein, Thomas Hubka, and Bob Martens.

A fully illustrated bilingual catalogue in German and English accompanies the exhibit, which was curated by Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek of the Jewish Museum Vienna, and designed by architect Martin Kohlbauer.

On Monday June 3, 2002, from 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM, a panel discussion featuring the collector, William L. Gross, the curator, Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek, and the exhibition designer, Martin Kohlbauer, will be held at Yeshiva University Museum.

Two or three years later, our Chief Curator Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek had the idea of doing an exhibition on the Shoah, and using the masks.If we have them, he thought, let's do something with them.
