Morningside College announced the upcoming retirement of Fred Erbes, director of gift planning, and Marilyn Heilman, associate professor and chair of the education department at Morningside, at a reception held in their honor on Tuesday, April 19, on the college campus.

Heilman has been a member of Morningside's faculty since 1978, including three years as director of the Learning Resources Lab from 1983 to 1986.Throughout her tenure, she has served as an academic advisor and as director and supervisor of student teachers.She has served on several boards and committees, including the advisory board for the Regional Center for Teaching and Learning at Morningside College, and two state accreditation review teams with the Iowa Department of Education.She is a faculty and chapter advisor of Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in education, and was Morningside's institutional representative to the Iowa Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (IACTE) and other education associations.
In 2003, Heilman was awarded the Lucille and Charles Wert Faculty Award for excellence in teaching.The annual award, established in 1996, recognizes the faculty member judged by his or her peers to best exemplify the ideas of the academic profession at Morningside.Heilman also received the Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Faculty Person of the Year Award in 1988, which is presented annually by the student leadership organization on campus.
Before coming to Morningside, Heilman was an elementary teacher at Eastwood Community Schools in Correctionville and Cushing, Battle Creek Community Schools, and Ida Grove Community Schools in Iowa.She served twelve years on the Eastwood Community School Board.
