August Equity investment manager Aatif Hassan led the construction of a water project in Kenya, as well as helping to develop a medical centre in Lahore, Pakistan. He put together loans from new shareholders on a not-for-profit basis, with the local community contributing 50p for every pound invested. He previously founded the Lucca Leadership Trust, which enables young people to make a positive contribution to their communities.

Hassan's next challenge is to build up a microfinance enterprise that will make small sums of money available to co-operatives in emerging economies. "Giving is important," he states.

"Every day new private equity funds are entering the healthcare sector," noted Aatif Hassan of August Equity at last month's Investing in Healthcare conference in London.There are, he said, 170 private equity houses in the UK, and between them they raised nearly £250 billion of funds in 2005 alone.

"Now that the care home sector has been consolidated you can expect to see private equity move into specialist care and private hospital sectors," said Hassan.And he believes deals in the primary care sector will also begin soon."Private equity firms have made strong inroads into the healthcare sector and are here to stay," he said.
