    Dorothy Hartman, 93, active in civic affairs

    ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - Dorothy Glover Waite Hartman died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Englewood Community Hospital.She was 93.

    Born in Boston, she was the daughter of Amory and Alice Waite.

    She attended public schools in Wollaston, Mass., and graduated from Quincy (Mass.) High School in 1927.She then attended Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., graduating in 1931 with a bachelor of arts in history and political science.

    In 1931 she married Standish C. Hartman and moved to Flemington, where Mr. Hartman had grown up.

    She was a substitute teacher and, after additional course work, received her teaching certificate and was a full-time teacher at Hunterdon Central High School.

    She was active in the Flemington Baptist Church as a member of the choir, a deaconess, Sunday School teacher and president of the Women's Department, and helped with the annual turkey dinner and other events.

    She helped to organize and was the adult mentor of the Red Dragons, a social and service-orientated group of teenagers during the 1940s.She was a 50-year member of the Flemington Woman's Club, serving in many capacities including the position of president.She was a member of the Darcy Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.She also served on the Flemington-Raritan Board of Education during the transition period from Flemington High School to Hunterdon Central High School.

    Starting in 1967, she and her husband spent several winters in Englewood, Fla. and eventually purchased a home in the Grove City section of Englewood.

    She became a member of the United Methodist Church in Englewood, and participated in many service and volunteer activities.

    She was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, serving as officer of instruction in boating safety, as a vessel examiner and flotilla historian.

    In the early 1990s, the Hartmans sold their home and moved to River Oaks Assisted Living Center, also in Englewood.Her husband died there in 1999 at the age of 92.

    She is survived by two sons, Standish C. of Lexington, Mass. and William of Delaware Township; nine grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.

    A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Oct. 5, at 4 p.m., at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington.

    Starting in 1967, she and her husband spent winters in Englewood and eventually purchased a home there.

    Interment was at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Flemington.
