    For instance, the Family Table Restaurant on U.S. Highway 169 remodeled and expanded.Also, Jet Co. painted and restored a neighboring building to make room for its expansion, and the FRIT property on the north end of Humboldt, which has been an eyesore and problem for the past 20 years, is scheduled to be demolished and cleaned up.It will ultimately becoming a 50-acre industrial park.

    Bank President John Hartford said the project has met the goal, which was to provide a modern, comfortable place to do business that provides the privacy and attention customers deserve.

    Not only did the bank upgrade its physical facilities, but technology upgrades were also made to better serve customers.Computer servers are all rack mounted with battery backup in a temperature and climate controlled room on a tile floor to keep dust to a minimum.

    "In addition to the building improvements, the bank has continued to modernize its technology and other services," Hartford said.

    Some other innovations in the new banking facility include electric heat mats at the front entrance, where ice tends to accumulate during the winter.

    "It's extremely difficult to keep ice off in the winter months on the north side.This should be a great safety improvement for our customers," Hartford said.

    Bank Iowa remained open throughout all of the construction.

    What was especially pleasing to Hartford was being able to utilize so many local contractors.In addition to Sande Construction as the general contractor, other local subcontractors included R & G Electric, More Than Floors, Humboldt Office Supply, Mike Opheim Painting, TNT Builders, Terry' Sign Company, and TRV Internet and Telephone.

    "We were extremely pleased we were able to work with local contractors.Sande Construction did an outstanding job of working with us and providing good value for their services," Hartford said.

    John Hartford, President of the Humboldt County Development Association (HCDA), met with the council to give an annual update.

    Hartford said the HCDA has a prospect for the "spec" building in the Northwest Industrial Park.The building is currently leased to Hog Slat for storage.

    He said there are two to three other solid prospects for the coming year.

    Hartford said an acreage located at the Northwest Industrial Park area was purchased by the HCDA and will be leased out until the land is developed.

    Hartford said on Monday, the HCDA met with representatives from Kossuth and Wright County to discuss possibilities of sharing economic development director services.

    Hartford said at a strategic planning meeting held in December and attended by the HCDA, most members of the Humboldt City Council and the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors, it was discussed to look at hiring a part-time economic development director.

    Hartford asked the city to budget $40,000 for the HCDA next year.Currently, the city contributes $30,000 annually.The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors has also been asked to commit $40,000.Hartford said they also have a goal of raising $20,000 from private partners.

    "We've accomplished a lot with volunteers and the help of the Humboldt City Administrator.We appreciate the support of the city and Humboldt County over the years," Hartford said.

    Mayor Steve Samuels thanked Hartford and the volunteers with the HCDA for their efforts.
