On October 27, 1908, in Chicago, Illinois, Gertrude Elizabeth Hartford was born to Gertrude (Hubbard) and Albert Hartford.
...
When Gertrude was 9 years old her family moved from Chicago to Toledo, Ohio where Gertrude,s father,s parents lived.Gertrude,s father worked for the railroad in Chicago and he got beaten up very badly. So badly, in fact, that he could never work again.Gertrude said in those days hoodlums hung around the railroad tracks and one day these hoodlums decided to beat her father up for no reason whatsoever. It changed the Hartford family,s life forever.Gertrude,s mother took care of her father and went to work and supported the family after that. She went to work as a sales clerk at LaSalle & Kochs. Gertrude grew up in Ohio and graduated from Woodward High School. After high school she continued to live at home, worked during the day and attended college at night. During this time a young man named Emmett Sutton moved into Gertrude,s neighborhood.
...
Too Gertrude,s surprise Emmett gave her more rides in his car than any of the other girls!
...
Gertrude tells me the reason they married on Christmas Day was because it was during the Great Depression and they both were working.
...
Gertrude says at first she did not like Maine but over the years it has grown on her and she is now a real Mainer!
