Dr Nick Hartell joined The School of Pharmacy in July 2002 as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology. It was here that he first developed an interest in writing in the third person. His interest in research started during a sandwich placement at the Institute of Neurology where he spent a year studying the effects of stroke injury on the brain. In 1987, with a first class degree in Biology, he headed west to the Department of Physiology in Bristol where for his postgraduate work he examined the analgesic effects of anaesthetics on the spinal cord. In 1992, after a short period of postdoctoral work, he was awarded an STA fellowship to work in Japan to investigate the molecular mechanisms that allow the brain to learn and retain memories. He returned to England in 1996 to take up a lectureship at the School of Pharmacy, Aston University. He became a Senior Lecturer there in 2001.
His principle research interests are in understanding brain function, in particular how the brain learns and stores memories.

Biography
Dr. Nick Hartell joined the School of Pharmacy in July 2002 as a senior lecturer in the department of pharmacology. His interest in research started not far from "The Square" during a sandwich placement at the Institute of Neurology where he spent a year studying the effects of stroke injury on the brain. In 1987, with a first class degree in biology, he headed west to the Department of Physiology in Bristol where for his post-graduate work he examined the analgesic effects of anaesthetics on the spinal cord. In 1992, after a short period of post-doctoral work, he moved east to Japan where he developed an interest in the molecular mechanisms that allow the brain to learn and retain memories. He returned to England in 1996 and took up a lectureship at the School of Pharmacy, Aston University.
Nick is a member of an MRC cooperative group with colleagues from Birmingham, Aston and Cardiff Universities interested in the network properties of neurones. He maintains collaborations with the Brain Science Institute in Japan and with Northwestern University in Chicago.
He currently uses electrophysiological, fluorescence imaging and molecular biological techniques to examine communication between cells via second messengers in the brain during learning. He also has interests in the signalling mechanisms involved in light transduction and processing in the retina as well as smooth muscle relaxation in the cardiovascular system. -
