Just 17 years old when Terence was born, she was determined to return to school to get her high school diploma, even with a new baby to take care of, he said.

"She went back at night after she worked all day," he said."She was just a fantastic person.She was a single parent that raised three boys in a tough environment with just a high school diploma."

Terence Hart, now a teacher in Pompano Beach, said his mother's work in the St. Lucie County school district inspired him to pursue a career in education.

"My mom was everything that I am now," he said.

"She took great pride in that job and she loved those kids," Terence Hart said.

Hart had six granddaughters two from Terence, three from her son, Rodney Hart, 31, and one from her third son, Kelsey Williams, 29.

Hart was a choir member at Friendship Missionary Baptist, and she brought life to the group, music minister Beral Toney said.

"She was just a funny lady," Toney said."If you were feeling bad, she wanted to know why you were frowning."

Terence Hart echoed the thought."She is going to be sorely missed.My mother was a very strong-willed, hard-working Christian lady," he said."It's a shame that it ended this way, but I know that she's looking down on us now and wanting us to be strong."

Always looking to help

Terence Hart also knew Sam Williams, whom he met during his first year of teaching at Manatee Elementary, he said.

A 14-year employee of the St. Lucie County school system, Hart worked worked as a health paraprofessional at Lawnwood Elementary for the past 10 years.Lawnwood Principal Michael Hitsman, who worked with Hart for eight of those years, said she had a big impact on kids at the school.

The way she handled the school's health office was endearing, Hitsman said, and it went beyond simply handing out medications and tending to illnesses.

"She took great pride in that job and she loved those kids," Terence Hart said.
