Roy Hart, a native Odessan, could be considered a living example of commitment in work and in ministry.For nearly 35 years, Hart has committed himself to Odessa College.He retired in May as dean of administration.And for nearly 17 years, Hart has served breakfast with the Sixth and Jackson Church of Christ breakfast ministry on Fridays.The ministry serves breakfast downtown six days a week.Hart began his life with OC as a student in 1959 and has worked with four of the college's five presidents.Hart said he decided to retire in part so he could have as much fun as his wife Merita, who retired a year ago.He also wants to practice his grandfathering skills with his five grandchildren, who live in Plano and San Antonio.While Hart said he is leaving a satisfying career at OC, he still plans to keep his commitment to the breakfast ministry.He said the same crew of seven has served breakfast for 17 years.Hart was among a handful of then-church members who began the breakfast ministry.The church members met in Hart's home to discuss ministry options."The hero story needs to be about everyone here that serves breakfast," Hart said.

Hart said breakfast is served from 6 until about 6:45 a.m. In the past, the ministry provided food for men and women who would hang around where the Texas Employment Commission office was once located."We've had as many as 30 people, ranging from those looking for work or those just passing through town," he said."We've seen quite a few of the same faces, like some who work the carnivals."Hart, who received his doctorate from Texas A&M Commerce, also serves on the Goodwill Board.He said his retirement will give him time to volunteer for other organizations too. Hart said the breakfast ministry has been part of his belief in community service.That service ideal also bled into his work for OC."I'm a product of Odessa College," he said.

Gipson's one-year contract with the college is for a package of $156,596, said Roy Hart, OC's dean of administration.Gibson receives a salary of $139,852, an annuity of $7,500, automobile expenses of $5,500 and membership to a civic club and country club at a cost of $3,744, Hart said.The purpose of today's meeting is not to change the terms of Gipson's contract, Hart said."This one is simply to review his performance and visit with him regarding his performance," Hart said, adding that all OC employees receive an evaluation at this time of year.Trustees can look at the amount of Gipson's salary in late summer after the budget is set, Hart said.

Other retirements this year include Judy Cornes, OC department chair and professor and Roy Hart, former dean of administration.

On August 7, 2009, Roy and I celebrated our 50th anniversary with a trip to Boston and other New England sites.

Roy and I continue to work in a church-based Breakfast Ministry and serve each Friday to those who need the assistance.
