The idea that one would - as did Pearl Hart who was quoted in the article - attend an expressly anti–Mormon conference in order to learn the "truth" about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints is the equivalent of seeking out the Klu Klux Klan to learn the truth about the Jewish faith or about minority races and cultures.
Furthermore, the statement by the editor and publisher of The Hawk Eye in which he says he viewed the publication of anti–Mormon sentiments "from the standpoint that if someone locally had submitted a letter to the editor like that, would I have run it" is merely a continuation of the long–held belief by some that it is somehow acceptable to slander and misrepresent the LDS faith.
Can you imagine if a similar situation arose which involved the Jewish faith or African Americans or the Islamic faith? There would be no tolerance for it. Somehow the fact that the the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints has been prosperous despite persecution somehow excuses such attacks in the minds of a few.
The idea that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints is not upfront about what they believe is ridiculous.
