We're really here to prevent an alcohol violation," said Paul Hart, owner of Lantana.
Selectmen held a public hearing Monday night to review Hart's request for outside service at his 43 Scanlon Drive establishment.
Hart said that under the guidelines of the state's no smoking ban Lantana has already created three outside smoking areas, including two side entrances that have overhead canopies and an outside fountain area adjacent to the parking lot.
Hart said that so far Lantana has had no issues with patrons leaving the building with drinks.
He said that during peak hours an attendant is outside to help control the traffic of smokers and enforce the no outside drinking policy.
He said an outside service amendment to the license will quash worries about a violation.
Selectman Paul Fernandes voiced the board's only concern when he questioned the locations of the smoking areas and that the board stays consistent with other approvals of outside drinking areas.
Fernandes said he was concerned the fountain area was located away from the building and too close to the parking lot and that people could get their own alcohol from parked vehicles.
Hart said there are trees and brush separating the fountain area from the parking lot.
Hart said Lantana has a policy of no alcohol allowed outside the building and there are no plans to have this policy changed.
