But , Adam Zachary Hart , 5 , of Yonkers is lying in a hospital bed in New York City.Born with a rare blood disease , his condition has worsened within the past three months. Now he needs a bone-marrow transplant to survive.

A bone-marrow recipient requires as perfect a match as possible to survive.Adam's ancestry is African-American , Caribbean and American Indian.Unfortunately , the number of minorities in the bone-marrow registry is very small , said his grand-aunt Orial Redd of Rye , executive editor of the Westchester County Press.
    ...
The need for bone-marrow donors in the minority community is so urgent that Adam's parents are asking anyone willing to be tested do so even if Adam is not the beneficiary.
    ...
Adam is very articulate and is an astute observer..He identifies with bald basketball star Michael Jordan. The youngster has lost his own hair from chemotherapy treatments.

While in the hospital , Adam watches Rugrats and Sesame Street on TV.Normally , he loves boy things , his mother said.He rides a motorized jeep , likes dinosaurs , trucks and basketball. He's an excellent dribbler..

The Harts first learned of their son's illness the day he was born , Feb. 3 , 1993.He has since been receiving excellent medical care from Dr. James Bussel , a pediatric hematologist at New York Hospital , his mother said.

Adam's problem is that his body can't manufacture platelets , the portion of the blood that helps clotting.Normal platelet count is 150 , 000 to 350 , 000.Adam currently has 2 , 000 platelets.

In the beginning , Ethlouise Hart said , Adam thought everyone went to the hospital every 10 days for infusions of platelets. But he learned differently when he went to school. He graduated from the Alcott Montesorri Nursery School in Ardsley and had just started camp at the YMHA in Scarsdale.

But , he soon tired and could not continue. For nearly three years Adam had been able to go without infusions , a situation that dramatically changed.During a routine exam three months ago , doctors found Adam was pre-leukemic.His condition continued to worsen and he was diagnosed with a rare form of Acute Myologinous Leukemia that will require a bone-marrow transplant to be done at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to save his life.

The bone-marrow screening test only requires a small amount of blood from the arm.The person providing the blood for the test must be between 18 and 60 and in good health.People up to age 75 may donate blood.

    ...
Ethlouise Hart was an opera singer with Opera Ebony in New York City before giving birth to Adam.
    ...
And , they're hoping that the Westchester community will find it in their hearts to rally behind Adam , a child his grand-aunt calls a little warrior , and help him win his battle for life.
