"We were boarding anything and everything out there," Harrison said.

The cutter Adak from Sandy Hook, N.J., captured three Iraqis and found a barge laden with mines.

"Often time, we were ahead of the minesweepers.That's not a comforting feeling when you go to sleep at night," Harrison said.

Petty Officer 1st Class David Christiansen, a quartermaster on the cutter Baranof from Miami, remembers the bombs exploding ashore in the early days of the war.

"You could feel the shock move through the boat," he said.

"If anybody's aboard that wreck, it would be very easy for them to sit there with a cell phone watching coalition forces," Harrison said.
