    "Often time, we were ahead of the minesweepers.That's not a comforting feeling when you go to sleep at night," Harrison said.

    Petty Officer 1st Class David Christiansen, a quartermaster on the cutter Baranof from Miami, remembers the bombs exploding ashore in the early days of the war.

    "You could feel the shock move through the boat," he said.
