Melanie HarrisMelanie Harris' culinary quest began in Mathews County, and after several stops along the way, she's back on the Middle Peninsula.Her family moved there from Virginia Beach when she was young.She remembers a lot of cooking at home when growing up.
"I was raised with three brothers, grandmothers, and my mother was a good cook," she says."We were constantly in the kitchen, and I was given a lot of creative freedom."
After two-year stints at Mary Baldwin College and Virginia Tech, Harris eventually landed at Baltimore International Culinary.Next she worked at the upscale Linwood's Cafe in Owings Mills, Md., before moving over to the commercial side with jobs at Sutton Place Gourmet and Whole Foods Market in the Washington, D.C. area.In 1999, she returned to the area to open Stillwaters on Main in Gloucester.
