Welcome to William T. 'Bill' Harper, the BVSO's new Executive Director
William T. Harper has joined the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra as executive director after an almost year-long search by the Board of Directors of the Symphony Society.Harper began his new assignment on July 1 and hit the ground running.
"Bill brings a great love for classical music and an extensive background in leadership positions to the Symphony," said board president Robert C. Borden.

Bill told The Bryan-College Station Eagle, "I retired in 1990 with the idea of stopping to smell the roses or, in my case, the salty sea air.I sailed my 47-foot ketch down the byways and tributaries from Lake Superior to Freeport. My intent was to sail off into the sunset, going from island to island in the Caribbean. But when I got to the Gulf, I found out that venturing out into the vast Gulf of Mexico by myself was something I did not want to do after all."
But he wasn't quite ready to give up the sea completely. He founded the Midwest Boaters Association in Freeport and served as president until 1993.

Since then, Bill has written and co-hosted The Classics and Their Times each week, taking a look at what was going on in the world when the great composers sat down to write their masterpieces.
That association with Penny Zent led Bill to apply to be the new executive director for the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra.

A Philadelphia native, Bill earned a bachelor of science in communications from Temple University in his hometown and a master of business administration from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.Bill spent several years as a writer and editor for the Philadelphia Inquirer, one of the nation's premier newspapers.
In 1962, Bill became president of the Midwest Gas Association. While continuing in that position, he founded Organization Management Inc. in 1974 and, in 1982, the National Energy Services Association. When he was chairman of the Greater Minneapolis Convention and Visitors Association, Bill was responsible for a successful drive to construct a $200 million convention center.
Along the way,Bill picked up numerous awards, including the "Father of the Waters" award presented by the city of Minneapolis for outstanding leadership and the Key Award presented by the American Society of Association Executives.
Bill said, "It is a great honor for me to be a part of the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra's family as its executive director.I've had a long history of enjoying the kind of music the BVSO plays and to now be as close to it as I am is like a dream come true.
"One of my goals for the Orchestra is to find the ways and means to share my joy of classical music with an even wider audience throughout the Brazos Valley."
"Even more importantly, I'd like to see the greatest share of that growth come from the young people of the area.Without their involvement, without their enjoyment, without their commitment, the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra in particular and classical music in general faces a perilous future."
