Approximately 1,000 people attended Woofstock 2007, according to Catherine Harmon, LCHS director of humane resources.

This year's event raised more than $4,500 for the animal shelter, which takes in an average of up to 7,000 animals - from dogs to pot-bellied pigs - every year, Harmon said.

Although Woofstock helps to raise awareness about dog issues such as leash laws and promotes area dog-related businesses, the most important part of the event, Harmon said, are the four-legged participants.

"I think they're having fun," she said, as she gazed out over the dog-filled park, buzzing with activity.

Last year's Woofstock event drew approximately 1,000 people according to Harmon, who anticipates even greater attendance this weekend.

"We try to add activities to Woofstock each year that will make the event more successful and fun for the community," Harmon said.

There will also be a Children's Area at Woofstock where kids will be treated to inflatables and games courtesy of the Sports Academy.

Children will also be allowed to meet and handle the pets of the LCHS.

"Along with the support of their parents, hopefully the children in attendance will learn that animals are loving creatures that just need human companionship," Harmon said.
