"Our students and faculty are getting a taste today of wireless technology that most of the world will not be using until years from now," said Elazar Harel, UCSD's assistant vice chancellor for Administrative Computing & Telecommunications.

During a shuttle ride yesterday, Harel used his Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC, along with a wireless modem card, to surf the Internet. As the bus rumbled through campus and onto Interstate 5, Harel watched video clips on CNN's Web site, left an e-mail message for his daughter at University of California Berkeley and checked his campus e-mail.

"This technology is really high speed, which means you can do much more than just e-mail."

Harel and other UCSD researchers envision an expanded network that commuters can use between UCSD's campus in La Jolla and its medical center in Hillcrest and maybe even along trolley and rail lines.

The UCSD shuttle project is one of several conceived by the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, which is pioneering the new technology.

The institute is a partnership between UCSD, University of California Irvine and several private-sector companies to promote advances in telecommunications and information technology in California.

What's new about this connection is that it unites a wireless local network, which is installed in the bus, with a new wide area network developed by Qualcomm.

"The ultra high bandwidth network that we have at UCSD makes it possible to move vast amounts of data to and from these modular data centers, and the fact that the units are green was a key factor in this procurement decision," said Elazar Harel, Assistant Vice Chancellor for ACT.
    ...
According to ACT's Harel, the units cost much less than traditional datacenters and are ten times faster to deploy.
