Window Woman of New England was established in 2003 by Alison Hardy. The idea for the business came about after years of frustration living in old houses with drafty broken windows and disatisfaction with replacement window options. Call it Yankee thrift, but it just made no sense to throw out windows with lots of charm and character just because they didn't look their best or were painted stuck. After years of trial and error, lots of reading, lots of questions, and a growing boredom with work in the textile business Ms. Hardy started working on not just her own, but friends windows, and then paying customers.

Alison Hardy, owner of Window Woman of New England, has restored and repaired windows in homes both grand and modest in Boston's North Shore for the past five years. After a career in the textile industry, she gave up the clean world of fabrics and color for the dirty, but rewarding world of sawdust and putty. She is a member of Historic New England, Historic Salem, Preservation Trades Network and New England Restoration Alliance.

Textile and apparel companies spend thousands of dollars annually to buy original artwork for design inspirations. These valuable assets get put in drawers , sent out to customers and frequently are lost or misplaced.

Fabrics and styles developed and/or produced by a company are also valuable assets. But finding samples often relies on diligent searches by designers , sales staff or administrative aides.GISTICS , a consulting company based in Larkspur , CA , estimates that creative professionals spend an average of one out of every 10 hours on file management , and search time accounts for a third of the pie.

Alison Hardy is president of FabriCAD , a consulting firm specialising in design technology for the textile and apparel industry.Although her offices in Chelmsford , MA , are cluttered with piles of fabric swatches , she tries to encourage better use of new technology at companies around the world.

On a related note, Alison Hardy of Improved Technologies identified the need for a standardized color system to enable those involved to speak the same "language" and to communicate colors quickly - critical to the fast-paced world of fashion. She noted that even trend services worldwide are increasingly using standardized systems such as Pantone and Scotdic."Nobody's going to wait because somebody's got a prettier book," she exclaimed."People want information immediately."

Hardy also pointed to the need for companies to implement color management software that can be used to create, view, scan, store and print colors, and to make sure that all people involved are introduced to the system "from day one."She also stressed that the success of these systems is largely dependent on color calibration among instrumentation and software, and that there are proven and affordable devices and software on the market for this purpose.
