Bethany Hanser is being recognized for more than 15 years of helping nursing mothers and mothers-to-be learn about breastfeeding and other maternity-related issues.Hanser, an International Board Certified Lactation Consult, currently owns Motherhood Express, a Florence store dedicated to providing education and support for new mothers.
A 2003 national survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that in Kentucky, only 56 percent of women breastfeed their baby.Long-term breastfeeding rates are even lower, with only 25 percent of Kentucky babies being breastfed at age 6 months and 11 percent at one year.
At Motherhood Express, Hanser and her staff offer nutrition counseling and breastfeeding education for new parents or parents-to-be, as well as a private space for mothers who may be shopping nearby and need to feed their babies.Hanser contracts to provide breast pumps to new mothers in the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) program, a federally funded nutrition supplement program. She not only teaches the WIC mothers how to use their pumps, but also provides any necessary education or emotional support.Hanser is also very patient as she navigates through the reimbursement process for the WIC-funded breast pumps, which can be difficult for small-business owners.
"Northern Kentucky is fortunate to have someone as compassionate and committed to breastfeeding as Bethany Hanser," said Jennifer Hunter, Interim Assistant Director of Clinical Services.
