Chris Hancock , marketing manager and Farmers Market director for Downtown Roanoke Inc. , says Hodges' presence on the market has had an impact.
I've noticed a world of difference in vagrant activity since Danny took over , Hancock says. You still see them , but you don't see the aggressive activity and the congregating.
...
Hancock says some of the vendors felt rattled last summer and fall when vagrants insisted on helping them load or unload their trucks for pay.
Some of the farmers were intimidated by these vagrants , he says. They would just pay them to avoid a confrontation..
...
Hancock says the city's image suffers when visitors feel unsafe.
I think the Roanoke City Market is the heart of the city , he says. It's one of our primary tourist destinations. We don't want people to come to the area and have a bad experience.People will tell a bad story a hundred times more than a good story..
