Miramichi Salmon Association President Mark Hambrook says that since other cities in New Brunswick are known as specialized hubs - for example, Moncton is the hub for transportation and manufacturing -- Miramichi would benefit from being a specialized area as well.

"If you're an environmental group and you want to set up shop somewhere, we want you to come to Miramichi," says Hambrook. He hopes the eco-economy idea will help reduce job loss and depopulation.
With a business plan in place, the committee has approached politicians to make them aware of Green Cove Futures idea. The committee also wants to get businesses that have left the province to return to the Miramichi region.Hambrook thinks these businesses could provide a valuable example to others."What better businesses than fellow New Brunswickers that have gone off and been successful?"he asks.
The Green Cove committee also wants to target schools to implement more specialized environmental studies programs, such as environmental ecology.Students who are looking to get masters degrees or PhD's in environmental studies should think to go to Miramichi. This would also build the "green" identity by focusing on young people entering the industry.
Hambrook says that the next step is to approach major corporations for a lending hand.He adds that his volunteers are starting to target the businesses and schools with the eco-economy idea.
