This spring, for example, the hot topic is winter browning of woody ornamentals, which is province-wide and related to the drought," says Patricia Hanbidge, coordinator of horticulture programs with the university's Extension Division.

Some of the questions are so common, fact sheets on the topics were prepared last year, and now there are 20 pamphlets on a variety of subjects.Gardenline staff also send out fact sheets from other agencies. These address topics such as composting from the Saskatchewan Waste Council, weed control from Saskatchewan Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization, and growing the province's indigenous plants from the Native Plant Society of Saskatchewan.Hanbidge says the pamphlets are useful because some questions arise every year, so gardeners can keep the information for future reference.

"Both the Gardenline and the pamphlets are a valuable way to educate the public with good, sustainable information on horticulture and gardening," says Hanbidge.

She also has valuable advice for callers who may become frustrated with waiting.Although the Gardenline allows callers to leave their name and number for call-back by the staff, the average of more than a 100 calls per day may delay these replies.Hanbidge suggests callers try to phone later in the day and also later in the week when the line is not as busy.
