Dr. Martin E. Hamner , retired associate dean of the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy , was also a poet.
In fact , Dr. Hamner wrote his own epitaph years ago , including it in a book of poems he published privately for friends and family.

Dr. Hamner died Thursday of heart failure at his home. He was 83.
Born and raised in a farming family in Castor , La. , the G.I. Bill after World War II helped him get the college education that launched his career as an academic.
During the war , he served in Navy intelligence in Texas and in the Commander Service Force at Pearl Harbor.
Following the war , he earned bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Colorado College of Pharmacy and later earned his doctorate.
Before joining the University of Tennessee in 1959 , he taught at the pharmacy schools at the University of Florida and Southwestern State College in Oklahoma.
He retired as the associate dean for the UT College of Pharmacy in 1988.
During his tenure there , the traditionally male student body changed with an influx of women , said his daughter , Eyleen Farmer , of Memphis. She said Dr. Hamner encouraged and supported the trend.
In addition to being a poet , he was a student of theology and Biblical literature and taught Sunday school at Raleigh Baptist Church and Second Baptist Church.
