    Steven A. Hammond, a former reporter for the Bangor Daily News and Maine television and radio stations, has been named president of the Union International des Advocates (UIA) a bar association that represents two million lawyers in 100 countries.

    He is only the second American to serve as president of UIA, which has six official languages and three working languages, English, French and Spanish.Hammond is fluent in all three and used them in his inaugural speech at Nice, France earlier this year.

    Hammond, now a partner in the New York City law firm of Hughes, Hubbard and Reed, worked for the Bangor paper, Portland television station WCSH-TV and Farmington radio station WKTJ before entering the University of Maine Law School.He is a native of Industry and graduated from Mt. Blue High School and Bowdoin College.
