Hammond is a native of High Point. She is the first and only African-American to serve on the Thomasville City Council. She was also the first coordinator of The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club in Thomasville. She is a member of the Beta Iota Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) International Sorority and chartered the First Daughter's of ESA Sorority in North Carolina.
Hammond is the former youth director at Cornerstone Church of Christ and also served as the director of the Sonshine Youth Group at First Methodist Church. In 2003 she retired from Liberty Drive Elementary School and since that time she has become a volunteer at the Thomasville Medical Center, where she serves on the center's Ethics Advisory Board.
Some of her outstanding awards include Duke Power Co. Retiree Citizen of the Year, Citizen of the Year for the Thomasville Chamber of Commerce, and the WFMY-TV "To Those Who Care" Volunteer of the Year Award.
She is married to Harold Hammond. They have four children, 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She has also been a foster mother to 44 children.
