Hammond said a common trick is for one coyote to distract a dog while another one, or more, circle around the back and pounce for the kill.

Owner Marc Hammond contracted with the Chatham-based real estate company about two weeks ago after unsuccessfully trying to sell the 3.2-acre property himself for about six months.

Hammond, who has owned the property for about 15 years, is just the third owner in more than 100 years, said Bert Freed, owner of Kinderhook Group.
    ...
Most recently, Hammond has operated The Crooked Lake House as a banquet facility."It's a beautiful place," Freed said."And it's in mint shape. He's done a great job maintaining it."

Freed said a big selling point for the property is its history. It was one of Roosevelt's favorite dining establishments while he was New York's governor.

Finally, residents alerted Marc Hammond, supervisor at the Pima County Animal Control Center and owner of Animal Experts, a humane animal trapping service. On Friday night, Mar. 8, a trap was set up at the location of the sightings. The next morning, Mr. Hammond found a stray dog asleep inside the trap.

The happy conclusion came swiftly. Not only was the dog identified by a Pima County license tag on her collar, but in addition, she was wearing a Home Again Companion Animal Retrieval System tag which meant that she was also identified by a subcutaneous microchip implanted in her back. The latest in ID technology, microchipping has led to the safe retrieval of lost pets from hundreds of miles away.

Doggone! After 11/2 years, she is home - [Cached Version]
Published on: 3/12/2002    Last Visited: 3/12/2002

It was Marc Hammond, owner of Animal Experts, a humane animal trapping service.

It seemed Shadow had been hanging out for several weeks at an East Side mobile home park, about two miles from the Cromwells' house.

People at the park had been feeding Shadow and tried to catch her but couldn't.They called Hammond, who sent one of his employees, Josh Marki, to set a trap Friday night.
    ...
Saturday morning, Hammond went to check on the trap, and there was Shadow, snoozing comfortably.

Hammond brought Shadow back to his house and took off her collar to see her tags.

There was a Pima County license tag.He called the Animal Control Center, where he also works as a supervisor, and got the Cromwells' name and address, but not their phone number.

There was another tag - from Home Again Companion Animal Retrieval System. That meant the dog had a microchip implanted in her back. Most shelters and veterinarian clinics can scan dogs with microchips to get the owner's name and phone number.

The scanner was not necessary, however.Shadow's tag had an 800 number for Home Again.
    ...
    Hammond called.

The person on the phone asked him to read the long number printed on the tag.

The numbers were worn.Hammond tried again and again to make them out. Finally, he came up with the right numbers, matching Shadow with the Cromwells.

The couple arrived minutes later, rushed from their car, took one look at Shadow and abandoned the grief they had been living with since a year ago last September.

A thinner, somewhat odorous but happy Shadow snuggled into Bob's arms.

"I have never seen anything like this in 20 years of rescue work," Hammond said.

When the trio arrived home, a bath for Shadow seemed in order.Afterward, the couple's two daughters came over with their children.

After they left, Shadow returned to the family room for a nap.

The attacks coincide with a sharp increase in reports of bobcat activity this year, said Marc Hammond, co-owner of Animal Experts Rescue & Trapping Service.

Hammond said he is receiving 25 to 30 bobcat complaints per week, about twice as many as the same time a year ago.
    ...
Hammond said that unlike bobcats, mountain lions prefer to avoid people.

"They're shy and just as soon stay away from us, but bobcats are different," Hammond said."They don't mind living with humans."

Many bobcat calls come from newer subdivisions, Hammond said.
