A race car smashed into Bernie Hallisky at 50-plus mph almost two years ago, breaking a bunch of bones from his waist down.

He survived, but "I feel like Humpty Dumpty," Hallisky said."And Dr. Scheid put me back together again."

Hallisky, 48, now a fabricator with driver Greg Ray's Access Motorsports, was injured Aug. 11, 2002, while working for Kelley Racing on pit road at the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta. He was on his knees, prepared to change the left rear tire for rookie driver Tony Renna, who was making a stop when his car inexplicably rotated and slid into the crew at an estimated 53 mph.

Hallisky, one of three crew members hit, was in the process of jumping up and out of the way -- another second, another few inches, and Hallisky might have cleared the car completely. The other pit crew members were less seriously injured, but Hallisky could have died.

He had a broken lower right leg, with bone sticking out through the skin; a busted hip socket; and a pelvis broken in 11 places.

Hallisky, of Shelbyville, immediately knew he wanted Scheid to be the one to operate on him, so he endured the three-hour ambulance ride to Indianapolis.

He had a series of surgeries, including several to place a plate on his pelvic bone, with 30 or 40 pins holding it in place.
    ...
The plate and the pins will remain inside Hallisky, looking a bit like a crude necklace of baling wire offset by quarter-inch-thick, 5-inch-long screws.

In November, he had four screws removed from his leg.
