"From here we will deliver high-quality fully built vehicles that are adapted to the requirements and operating conditions that apply in the region," said Per Hallberg, Scania's Head of Production and Procurement, at a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Swedish Crown Princess Victoria and other dignitaries.

The facility will have the capacity for customisation of about 1,400 vehicles per year and is located in a 20,000 square metre industrial site in the expansive Jebel Ali economic free zone in the port area of Dubai.Operations will begin during the second half of 2008 and will initially encompass vehicles for construction haulage, such as tipper and concrete trucks, but the facility will also be adapted for future bus bodyworking.

Establishing the plant in Dubai is part of Scania's growth strategy, which includes a greater focus on vehicles in segments where Scania has a weaker position today than in the traditionally strong long-haul segment."Our collaboration with selected suppliers that are well-established in Arab markets, together with the shorter lead and delivery times provided by the Dubai facility, will greatly benefit our expansion in the region," Mr Hallberg says.

Per Hallberg, Scania's Head of Production and Procurement, explained to the Capital Markets Day audience how Scania will achieve annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles by around 2015.

"This implies that we will boost production capacity by 10,000-12,000 vehicles per year. The increase can be accomplished with limited investments in our existing production structure, and we will achieve it without sacrificing quality and delivery precision," Mr Hallberg said.
    ...
Here the dedicated efforts of our employees to constantly improve our working methods will continue to play a key role," Mr Hallberg said.

"This marks another step in the process of securing replacement jobs in Sibbhult," says Per Hallberg's, Scania's Head of Production and Procurement.

Together with the agreement signed with Sibbhultsverken AB in June 2006, Scania has secured some 200 replacement jobs in Sibbhult, following the decision to concentrate its European production of axles and gearboxes to Södertälje.

SwePart Transmission, a company in the Hexagon Group, will take over manufacturing of some components for Scania's gearboxes. These operations in Sibbhult will start during the second half of 2007 and initially employ about 50 people.

"Given the great expertise that SwePart Transmission possesses in the transmission field, we will expand our business with a long-term, quality-conscious supplier of gearbox components," Mr Hallberg says.
