Foreign Service Officer
Parker Franklin Hallberg, 62, a U.S. Information Agency Foreign Service officer for 25 years before retiring in 1992 as executive officer of the agency's Paris office, died Jan. 20 at George Washington University Hospital.He had lung cancer.
His USIA career included tours in Germany, Indonesia, the Philippines, France and Washington.For the last three years, he served on the corporate board of EnviroTek, a development company.
Mr. Hallberg, who lived in Washington, was a native of Detroit.He was a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he also received a master's degree in political science.He came to Washington in 1963 as a management intern with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Washington and served on the executive committee of the Episcopal Caring Response to AIDS.He served for a time as executive director of International Voluntary Services in Washington, a nonprofit organization.He also served on the boards of Canterbury School in Accokeek, the Arts Club of Washington and INTART, a foundation promoting art from the former Soviet Union.He was a member of Diplomatic and Consular Officers Retired.
His marriage to Jane Birdwell Henderson ended in divorce.
Survivors include his companion of 20 years, Nicolaas Soetaryo Soedjiman of Washington; a son from his marriage, Thomas, of Austin; and a granddaughter.
