Monti Hallberg, superintendent of schools in Barron, Wis., about 100 miles southeast of the Twin Ports, had been thinking for a few days about how his district could help the people of the Gulf.He feared the devastation would swallow up whatever aid the community of 5,000 people could muster.
"That's where it started.I was driving down the road and heard Brett Favre on the radio," Hallberg said.

Hallberg connected with the Brett Favre Fourward Foundation, a nonprofit that helps disabled and disadvantaged youths in Wisconsin and Mississippi, and volunteered to help. The school district has since raised about $8,000 for relief efforts and sent two semitrailer loads of food, clothes and school supplies to the rural community, which is about 60 miles northeast of New Orleans.
A third load should be delivered in January, and a 100-person team may travel down in late February and early March to help rebuild.
"The Brett Favre Fourward Foundation has touched the lives of children in Wisconsin and Mississippi, and Brett Favre has certainly touched the lives of millions of people in Wisconsin, so we thought the least we could do was touch the lives of some people in his hometown," Hallberg said.
