Natalie Guzman, public relations director for Fifth-Third, addressed the issue in an e-mail conversation.Last month, an error in the automated insertion machine did package several different statements from different customers into one envelope.But, no personal information, like Social Security numbers, were divulged.
"We're concerned whenever one customer has an issue," Guzman wrote."We have isolated the problem."
The bank has taken steps to correct the problem and will print a new thick black demarcation line at the bottom of each statement.That will help the optical reader differentiate between one mailing and another.
"We take our responsibility to safeguard information very seriously," Guzman said, "and we have an excellent track record as one of the safest financial institutions in the country."

Guzman urged customers to examine their statement each month for unauthorized activity to guard against any problems.
"We process five million statements each month and pride ourselves on our service," Guzman said.
