Richard Guy, president of the fire company, said Renton didn't show up for prolonged periods of time, had neglected his dues and "did not have visibility" at the firehouse.

Maybe the members felt he [hadn't been] interested and didn't want to go through that again," Guy said.
Renton denies that allegation, saying that during his 12 years as a firefighter, he went on 50 percent of the fire calls.

Guy said Falls gets numerous applications for membership. His company accepts applicants if they satisfactorily answer questions about their reasons for joining.
The company voted in about eight members in 2004, Guy said.He added Renton's rejection could have been attributed to "past experiences" with other members.
"We want to make sure we have the right people for the company. That same night [Jan.3], we did accept another new member.Whether the decision [about Renton] is right or wrong, I can't overrule it," Guy said.
