Boston, MA -- Stephen M. Gutting, MD, a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and a specialist in spinal surgery, joined the medical staff at Caritas St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, a teaching affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine.Gutting's arrival at Caritas St. Elizabeth's followed the summer publication of the Massachusetts Medical Society's 2007 Physician Workforce Study, which concluded that the number of neurosurgeons in the Commonwealth is critically low.

With Gutting's help, the neurosurgery team at Caritas St. Elizabeth's may be able to see a patient within a week of the patient's call for an appointment and will offer seamless coverage of the hospital's emergency room regardless of the patient's neurosurgical needs."
Gutting specializes in treating patients with cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine disorders and performs minimally invasive procedures, such as discectomy and decompressive laminectomy, as well as complex spinal fusions and instrumentation.
He has more than seven years of private practice experience and comes to Caritas St. Elizabeth's from Sun Health Neurosurgical Services in Phoenix, AZ.Additionally, Gutting was the director of Neurosurgery for a Level II trauma system in the Midwest that serves an area of more than a million people.
"I'm looking forward to practicing medicine in the Boston area given the outstanding reputation for health care in this region," Gutting said.
