"In the past we were always concerned about esthetics, about getting that tooth back into its original position so the patient leaves with a smile," said AAE President James L. Gutmann, DDS, a practicing endodontist and Director of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Endodontics at Baylor University College of Dentistry in Dallas."Patients need to understand that if they want that tooth back in its exact place, we may cause more damage. We need to reassure the patient that we're trying to create the best environment for healing and that we can improve the esthetics later."

Although this approach requires more dental treatment to eventually improve the position of the luxated tooth, the treatment should be covered by insurance as part of the necessary treatment for the original injury, Dr. Gutmann said.
