Woodmere, NY (March 16, 2006) - Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools announces that David Gutmann has been appointed principal of George W. Hewlett High School, effective July 1, 2006.Mr. Gutmann is succeeding Dr. Joyce M. Bisso, who will assume the position of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for the district upon the retirement of Mrs. Susan Pratt in July 2006.

Mr. Gutmann's appointment was approved by the Board of Education of Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools on Wednesday, March 15th at the district's board meeting.
Mr. Gutmann's professional experience spans more than fifteen years in education at the high school level.Currently, he is Assistant Principal of Roslyn High School , a position he has held since 2001.Prior to coming to Long Island , Mr. Gutmann spent several years as an Assistant Principal for various New York City Public Schools and eight years as a high school English teacher.He holds an M.S. degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Baruch College and B.S. and M.A. degrees in Theatre Arts from the University of California . He is New York State certified in English, Speech and Administration. Mr. Gutmann was selected for the high school principal position after an extensive and inclusive recruitment, screening and selection process.A highlight of the search was an on-line survey to solicit the community's perceptions of the qualities of an outstanding educator and leader for the position of principal of George W. Hewlett High School.The Superintendency of Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools also conducted an on-site visit to Roslyn High School, where Mr. Gutmann is currently serving as Assistant Principal.A portion of the visit included the opportunity to meet informally with students, teachers, parents and a variety of faculty and support staff.
Students were overwhelmingly supportive of Mr. Gutmann.One of the most powerful quotes of the day came from a student who said, "Mr.Gutmann is a kind man.But don't mistake kindness for weakness.He is a very strong man; he's tough, but he cares."This theme resonated with the majority of students offering commentary.Parents were equally enthusiastic about Mr. Gutmann.They shared that he is willing to take an unpopular stand if it is the right stand for students.He is a very visible presence in the school; he attends all functions, performances, events, games and activities.He is someone that knows every student."It is clear that Mr. Gutmann is a man of the highest ethical and moral character.
