Barbara S. Gutmann is Of Counsel to the firm practicing in Butzel Long's Ann Arbor office.She graduated from the New York University School of Law (J.D., 1975) and the New York University School of Education (B.S., cum laude, 1971).

Ms. Gutmann has over twenty-five years experience in ERISA and employee benefits law, as in-house counsel at a Fortune 50 corporation and with a federal agency, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.As corporate counsel, she advised plan sponsors, plan administrators and human resources personnel on a wide range of employee benefit matters including plan interpretation, design and drafting, and regulatory compliance.She has extensive experience with business transactions, including corporate acquisitions and divestitures.

Ms. Gutmann is a Charter Fellow of the College of Employee Benefits Counsel.An active member of the American Bar Association, she served as one of eight members of the senior editorial board for both the original and second edition of Employee Benefits Law, a comprehensive text published by the Labor and Employment Section of the ABA.She also served as chair of the Labor and Employment Section's Committee on Employee Benefits and on committees and task forces in the ABA Section of Taxation and the Section of Corporation, Banking and Business Law, involving Qualified Domestic Relations Orders, Title VII Issues, COBRA Regulations, Welfare Plan Reform and Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation.She is a former chair and past member of the Board of Directors of the American Petroleum Labor Lawyers Association.

Ms. Gutmann is a member of the State Bar Association of Michigan and the Washtenaw County Bar Association (Labor and Employment Section and the Alternate Dispute Resolution Section).
