Roberto Gutierrez, D-McAllen, who has just been appointed to the House Appropriations Committee's subcommittee for education, said it was important South Texas educational institutions do not lump themselves with San Antonio or Corpus Christi when arguing for more state funding.

He said the Valley's growth deserved special attention.

"The Valley needs more assistance not cutbacks," Gutierrez said."We need to educate Texans and retrain Texans so they can be good taxpayers, rather than dependents on social services."
