Dr. Daniel I. Gutiérrez

Isaías Daniel Gutiérrez, former chief of PAHO's U.S.-Mexico Border Field Office and now area manager for Planning, Program Budget and Project Support, was honored by the U.S. -Mexico Border Health Association as "Outstanding Worker" for both the United States and Mexico.Gutiérrez, a native of Peru, was recognized for his dedication to working for health in the border populations.He received the honor during the association's 65th annual meeting, held May 20-22 on Padre Island, Texas, USA.

Dr. Isaias Daniel Gutierrez, a national of Peru, obtained his medical degree from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru, where he specialized in obstetrics and gynecology.He also received a master's degree in public health from the School of Hygiene and Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, United States of America.

Dr. Gutierrez began his professional career in 1977 in Lima, Peru, at the Ministry of Public Health as Chief of the Medical Center in Callao.From 1982 to 1984 he was Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos.Also, between 1982 and 1988, he worked as Gynecologist/Obstetrician at the Daniel A. Carrion Hospital of Callao.In 1986 he founded a private hospital in maternal and child health in Callao and was its General Director until 1988.From 1984 to 1988 he was also an advisor to the Departments of Maternal and Child Health, Human Resources, and Family Planning and National Coordinator for the Reproductive Health Program of the Ministry of Health of Peru, as well as a consultant for the Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics.He is the author of several publications in the field of reproductive health.

Dr. Gutierrez joined PAHO in 1988 as a short-term consultant in maternal and child health and family planning in La Paz, Bolivia.In 1989 he was appointed Advisor to Bolivia in this field and in September 1992 he was transferred to Mexico to serve in the same capacity.In February 1995 he was named PAHO/WHO Representative in Belize and later transferred to Venezuela to serve in the same capacity.

Farewell to Dr. Daniel Gutiérrez06-23-2006 - The Pan American Health Organization recently announced the promotion of Dr. Daniel Gutiérrez, Chief of the U.S.-México Border Field Office, El Paso, Texas.Dr. Gutiérrez assumed the position of Chief of the Budgeting and Planning Department of the Pan American Health Organization in Washington, D.C. on June 1, 2006.The staff of the El Paso Field Office presented Dr. Gutiérrez with a plaque recognizing his accomplishments during a reception on May 30.Mr. Héctor Martínez, Executive Secretary of the México Section, United States- México Border Health Commission, also recognized Dr. Gutiérrez for his professionalism and support to the U.S.-México Border Health Commission.

Dr. Gutiérrez was recently selected to receive the prestigious award of the United States-México Border Health Association, the "Outstanding Health Worker of the Year Award", during the meeting of the Association in Monterrey, Nuevo León, México.Both the U.S. and Mexican representatives selected Dr. Gutiérrez unanimously, which is a first for this award by the Association.
