Gustavo Gutierrez is the CEO and sole owner of Pallet Consultants, a company he started in 1996 after working for southeastern-based Bromley Pallet Recyclers.Pallet Consultants is a certified minority owned and operated corporation.

Not only did Gus get to know the pallet markets well before launching his own business, he also excelled at pallet sales."I increased sales for Bromley 200 percent," he said.Still, he wanted to do more.He realized he was "just wanting to be an entrepreneur."

Gus purchased Bromley's Pompano Beach, Fla. facility, and it became the headquarters of Pallet Consultants.Then he launched a cold start in the Atlanta market.Since then, he has added facilities in two other Florida communities, Fort Myers and Haines City.

After years of dealing with hurricanes, Gus had a business continuity plan ready and waiting.Thanks to his expertise through trial by fire, Gus knows the dice will fall according to plan.

On March 3, Pallet Consultant's Pompano Beach, Fla. was engulfed by flames.With losses well into the millions and the 106,000 sq. foot warehouse facility damaged beyond recognition, Gus never flinched.

"We had the right people in place," Gus said.

Gus is estimating a thirteen month time table for its completion, but he expects all of his customer's orders to be filled in the meantime.

The Pompano Beach facility usually produces 34,000 pallets per week, but now it's down to roughly 23,000 per week.Gus expects his facility to increase production by another 10% of the typical weekly average upon completion.

Gus Gutierrez, CEO of Pallet Consultants, opened the final day of the conference with a presentation about disaster preparedness.His company headquartered in Pompano Beach, Fla. recovered from damage caused by Hurricane Wilma in 2005 only to erupt in what local, state and federal officials deemed a "massive electrical/accidental fire" in March 2006, demolishing 106,000-square-feet of the facility.

Gutierrez talked about the process of rebuilding as well as crisis communication tactics and the importance of strategic prevention planning."It's very important to assign a disaster team, provide top management with guidelines, identify serious risks and identify critical products when dealing with something like a hurricane or a fire," he said.
