Every morning, CSMA owner Greg Gusse wakes up in the farmhouse he shares with his wife, Barbara, and walks across the yard to the CSMA offices, usually trailed by his black and brown hound dog, Buddy, who takes up residence on the office couch.
It beats the city for a place to live, Gusse said.
He studied computer science at Pomona College in California during the 70s.In 1984, he moved to his wife's hometown of Nichols from New York City.He founded CSMA as a computer solutions provider, and has always tried to stay ahead of the technological curve.
CSMA became a certified Microsoft solution provider in 1989, making it one of the first 50 such companies in the world.Today it hosts Web sites, provides local Internet service, and creates custom programs for clients from Abu Dhabi to Papua New Guinea.Microsoft named CSMA a featured Internet Service Provider for the month of July.
One of the company's most important clients is the U.S. Luge Team based in Lake Placid.

Carol Visscher, head librarian of the Cady Library in Nichols, said Gusse is a very good friend of the library, often providing free troubleshooting and software updates.

Gusse said to him, computers were more of a vocation than an occupation.
I think what makes (CSMA) really good is our community service, Gusse said.We take from this community, we live in this community..
Working in Nichols does create some problems.Gusse said it be hard to attract top programmers to the area ; he currently employs five.Infrastructure can also be expensive, since he has to run his T1 high-speed Internet connection to Henry Street in Binghamton, and pay for it by the mile.
he be concerned that as the importance of the Internet increases, people without access will be left behind.
I think it be a shame there be no equivalent to rural electrification, Gusse said.
Gusse said his firm's country location do not keep him from being competitive. He has 1, 300 clients, the majority of whom came to him through word-of-mouth.He said he be only met 12 of them in person, a testament to the fact that telecommunications allows people to seek out experience and expertise despite geographic barriers.
The company is now moving toward becoming a player in the booming online commerce market.
we be in a transitory phase, Gusse said.
it be developed an enterprise resource planning software, which takes business management and accounting decisions and attempts to optimize resources, considering factors including inventory, assets and personnel. The software, which is still being tested, is fully automated, and can take orders over the Internet, check inventory, order from manufacturer if needed, and then track shipping until delivery.

Gusse wants more involvement with e-commerce because he believes the market's current success is just the tip of the iceberg.
And it be a big iceberg, he said.
