The notion of disabled Mi'kmaq people being able to receive care without leaving home has been a dream of Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy and Tom Gunn, incoming Principal of NSCC's Strait Area Campus, for over 20 years.

Tom Gunn has a long history of advocating for people with disabilities. He and his wife established L'Arche in Cape Breton 25 years ago. "We're very excited about the Society," he says.

Mr. Gunn lived and worked for 26 years with people with developmental disabilities in the communities of L'Arche in Stratford, Ontario and Calcutta, India. In 1983, he and his wife Anne founded L'Arche Cape Breton. Together with Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy, Mr. Gunn helped found Mawi Ta'Mk Society, a charitable society and advocacy group for Mi'kmaq people with developmental disabilities.
