Later, teacher Sally Guerrero tells me, "Speech is a core learning step to singing. Chanting - using our voices in musical and rhythmic ways rather than having the added complexity of a musical melody - teaches them to use their voices in a way that's pre-singing but still musical. Plus, nursery rhymes are packed with fun and silly sounds. "There's something about human nature that is attracted to the ancient ways of using voices that are poetic and playful," Guerrero says.

Schulwerk arose from Orff's search for "elemental music" - music that was simple, spontaneous and visceral. After World War I, he was among several European artists looking to break out of complex 19th-century forms.

This exercise, Guerrero explains, "gives the children the kinesthetic experience of going from high to low, or low to high notes.

Kids who start earlier, says Guerrero, often get discouraged and quit. They can also develop hand and arm injuries similar to carpal-tunnel syndrome.

Guerrero designed the conservatory's Young Musicians curriculum based on the theories of Orff and Kodaly. (Both are considered general approaches to music, not specific methods; accredited teachers use them as guides for their own lesson plans.) The conservatory offers this curriculum to all pre-K through fifth-grade classes at Jefferson Elementary School in Pasadena.

First, Sally Guerrero will share singing and rhythmic games for children ages 4, 5 and 6 years.Learn some tried, tested and fun activities that teach and reinforce solfege, rhythms and listening in the early childhood years.It is through repetition that young children build musical understanding and skills.These games and activities are fun, creative and engaging and allow you, the teacher, to repeat important concepts without losing the children's interest.The second half of the day will focus on Songs of the Season appropriate for elementary students of varying ages.

Sparked by her interest in the philosophies of Carl Orff and Zoltàn Kodàly, Sally Guerrero began her pursuit of music education in the 1980's when her two sons were very young.

She has specifically focused her training by completing several of the Level 1 and 2 Orff and Kodàly certification courses (West Chester University, Pennsylvania; The San Francisco School; California State University, Northridge; California State University, Dominguez Hills; California State University, Los Angeles.) She has studied the curricula of many of the early childhood music organizations currently found throughout the United States and Canada. Based on her extensive knowledge of the Orff and Kodàly philosophies and her study of early childhood music education, she has been actively involved in writing the curriculum used by the Conservatory.

Her career has included teaching music at the preschool and university levels, directing children's choirs and teaching elementary school classroom music. Ms. Guerrero presents workshops to music teachers locally and nationally. She has been on the faculty of the Conservatory since 1992.
