Mike is a native of the Pacific Northwest. He was born at Ft. Lewis, Washington in 1945 and, while growing up in a military family as well as during his own military service, has always called the Puget Sound area home.

Mike's professional training is as an engineer. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His skills as an artist are self acquired. Throughout his career art and painting have been a constant background and source of satisfaction. It was not until his assignment to the Panama Canal in 1974, however, that maritime art became a major interest.

In 1979 Mike and his family left the military and returned to Washington.
