"They really show the evolution of technology," said Steve Groves, an Army research and development scientist who helped establish the military's Internet cafés in Iraq.

"IP-based satellite systems are new to communications," said Groves, who also serves as director for military space and concepts at the Army Space and Missile Defense Battle Lab in Colorado Springs, Colo. "They are unheard of in the military."

Segovia's network gave the Army's space support teams increased bandwidth and reliable communications.It delivered information on satellite communications, space weather, the Global Positioning System, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, enemy missile launches, and friendly and enemy troop positions, Groves said.

Herndon VA (SPX) Jul 12, 2005Segovia, a provider of secure global voice, data, and video broadband satellite services to U.S. military forces operating in Iraq and Afghanistan, has named Steven Groves as Director for Netcentric Research.

Enabling netcentric warfare - the process by which data can be distributed across all geographies and all personnel without needing to move large command and control centers - is a vital component of the U.S. Department of Defense's transformation strategy.

In his new role, Mr. Groves will lead the development of leading-edge technology and service initiatives in support of Segovia's current and future DOD-related deployments.

To accomplish this, Mr. Groves will maintain frequent in-person contact with U.S. military organizations and affiliated user communities to determine likely upcoming requirements, directives and goals.Based on his findings, he will guide Segovia's internal research and development team.

Segovia President and CEO Mike Wheeler said the appointment of Mr. Groves is a critical step in Segovia's continued evolution.

In addition, Mr. Groves is a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Far East, Western Europe and the U.S. During that time he served in a broad range of senior technology positions, including lead instructor for the Army's Satellite Network Controller Course, as well as senior leadership positions at the U.S. Army Signal Center, U.S. Signal Corps Regimental Noncommissioned Officers Academy, and the U.S. Army Battle Command Battle Laboratory, and collaborative work with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the U.S. Army Space Command.
