"It was just another good Victor Valley--Barstow rivalry game," Barstow coach David Grossman said.

Neither team led by more than five points until late in the second half.

In a rivalry that has always been spirited, the competitiveness of Monday's contest went just a little too far, according to Barstow head coach Dave Grossman.

"I've been here six years and every year it's the same thing," Grossman said."(VVC) is much better than people give them credit for. They're athletic and they took it right at us.It's unfortunate that the stuff at the end had to happen, but (the Rams) came in and played hard."

The Vikings (13-4, 3-1 FC) trailed Victor Valley (4-13, 0-4 FC) for most of the first half behind a dismal shooting effort.Barstow shot just 9 of 26 from the field (34 percent) in the opening 20 minutes, and if not for 13 of 19 made free throws, the Vikings may very well have been behind by more than the two points they trailed by at the intermission.

For David Grossman, basketball is life.365 days a year, it's a disease that keeps him up at night thinking of different strategies or searching for other ways to use his personnel the best possible way in the right situation at the right time.

Grossman, Barstow College's men's basketball coach, has lived that way for most of his life -- first, playing the game and now, teaching the game to anybody who wants to learn.

Off the court, he's a go-getter -- always looking for better players, trying to bring in the best possible talent to his program.

On the court, he's a perfectionist

"Unfortunately I am a perfectionist," Grossman said.

Two High Desert locals also join the team with Barstow graduate Ryan Boyes and Silverado's Dominic Priestley -- both picked BCC because of its coaching staff in Grossman and Assistant Coach Andre Clemmer.
    ...
"One of my goals coming off last year in recruiting was to get stronger underneath the basket and get stronger inside," Grossman said."We've accomplished that with all of our new interior players."
    ...
"Our biggest challenge is closing the gap between us and them," Grossman said.
    ...
"I think we have a lot of weapons," Grossman added.

"We just have to continue to get better," Barstow head coach David Grossman said."In the second half I thought we executed our set plays well.

Wednesday's contest was the latest chapter in a rivalry that produced a pair of memorable finishes in 2003.After falling to the Rams 84-82 at VVC last year, Grossman and the Vikings were pleased to walk away with the road win for 2004.

"You have to hand to VVC," Grossman said.

"It's a doable thing for us," Barstow coach David Grossman said."We have to come in with the mentality that it's a one game season and if you lose, your season is over.

"There are a lot of parallels to the NCAA tournament. You have to be in that survive and advance mode. The defense is going to be tougher and each possession has to be more important than it was in the regular season."

    ...
Grossman agreed, saying that the team that is more focused mentally is going to win.

"It's not about the physical part, it's about the mental part," Grossman said."You've got to be focused every game mentally. If you're focused mentally then you're going to be able to over come the physical part of the game."

A Barstow win would likely set up a showdown with San Bernardino Valley College, whom the Vikings have swept this year.

BARSTOW - Barstow head men's basketball coach David Grossman explained that he knew his Vikings were in for a tough battle.

"We were really, really, really, really lucky to get a win," Grossman said."(The Roadrunners) did a great job, and tonight it's better to be lucky than good."

While luck may have been on Barstow's side, the Vikings were plenty adequate on offense in the final 20 minutes.Barstow shot 50 percent (15-for-30) from the floor and connected on 24 of 33 free throw attempts, almost doubling its first-half total of 32 points.

That night-day scoring performance had even Grossman perplexed.

"I don't think we played any differently," Grossman said of the two halves."We had the same shots.Maybe we just made them in the second half."

The Vikings trailed 37-32 at the intermission, and no Barstow player had scored in double digits. If the second half had been televised, however, perhaps it could have been called "Ed TV."

"They started making shots and we didn't respond," Barstow College coach David Grossman said."We didn't stay in the gameplan.

"This was a game we felt we could win. We're talented enough to beat a team like that."

Barstow was without two of its players due to suspension following a game-ending near-brawl on Monday against Victor Valley College.

According to Grossman, both players were reserves and Grossman refused to comment on the incident.

Barstow College coach David Grossman has assembled one of, if not the most exhilarating ballers in Southern California.

    ...
"I think we have the athleticism to win our conference," Grossman said."We have the ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter. We've got to show up our defense and I think we can stack up with anybody.

"All we want is an opportunity to make the playoffs and I think that's realistic."

And if the Vikings keep playing the way they have thus far, averaging 95-points-per-game, a shot at the postseason is a guarantee.
    ...
"Edmound Elzy has a chance to be an all conference guy this year," Grossman said."He's got all the tools; he's athletic, he's gotten stronger and he understands the game better than he did last year."

Just last week in a preseason game against San Diego City College, Elzy dropped in 19-points as Barstow destroyed the Knights, 104-76.

"I just try to go out there and work as hard as I can to be the best I can be and encourage other people to do the same," Elzy said."We're getting better and better each game and our offense is really good."

    ...
"I think everybody looks for him to be a solid guy," Grossman said."He's going to go out there and get it done every night. He's got to be that guy."

Up and down the roster, the Vikings can put any combination of players on the court and be triumphant.
    ...
"We're an exciting group," Grossman said."We're gonna get up and down the floor. We're gonna shoot 3s.We're gonna trap and press.

"It's just an exciting brand of junior college basketball. These guys work hard everyday and hopefully people will come out and watch them play."

Barstow coach Dave Grossman was happy that the Vikings (10-12, 1-6 FC) were able to hold their ground against the Eagles.

"This was their best effort of the year.I'm proud of the boys," Grossman said."They played well.We executed and we defended."

He still has elements of the game that he wishes to improve, though.

"We've got to build on it," Grossman said."Our goal is still to make the playoffs."
