Steve Groene: One Year Later
...
- Steve Groene doesn't want death penalty trial for Duncan
...
It was a day that would forever change the lives of two parents: Steve Groene, the children's father, and Lee McKenzie Wood, the mother of Mark McKenzie.
...
Steve Groene lost two of his children - sons Slade and Dylan - in a series of crimes that began at that house on Wolf Lodge Bay last May.
...
One year later we now know at the time Steve Groene was appealing for his children to come home, young Dylan and Shasta were in the woods of Montana allegedly with convicted sex offender Joseph Duncan and that Dylan would never come home.
...
These days Steve Groene has become much more than a victim of this horrific tragedy. From bike rallies to meeting with Opran Winfrey, Steve has become an outspoken advocate for tougher laws that would have put his children's accused killer behind bars for life decades ago.Dylan's Law was named for his youngest son.
"Hopefully, Washington will get it passed and maybe set the precedent on that," Steve said.
And while he's advocating for tougher laws to prevent what happened to his kids from ever happening again, he's fighting a battle of his own.
He was diagnosed with throat cancer soon after the murders and Steve wants to spend his life now caring for his three surviving children, even if it means sparing the life of his sons' alleged killer.
"I'd like to see this guy get his just dessert, but if we could find out about some other crimes or other things by doing a plea bargain with this guy, I think that's a better route to go," Steve said.
Steve says he doesn't want to mark this sad occasion but instead plans to celebrate his sons' birthdays and Shasta's recovery. One year to the day since his family was torn apart, he asks the community that reached out to him for one more thing.
