Groene was an active member of Holy Name Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served on many church committees for 40 years.

He was a member of the Winfield Elks Lodge and the Lions Club, a former president of the Cowley County Farm Bureau Association and a member of the board of directors of the Kellogg Cooperative Association.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Groene, Winfield ; and numerous nephews and nieces, including Raymond Groene, Francis Groene, Elaine Barnthouse, Kathleen Lewis and Lorraine Donohue, all of Winfield, and Leonard and Ed Groene, both of Arkansas City.
