Bertram Groene's hobby is collecting inscribed Civil War weapons and equipment, especially guns and swords.An uncle gave him his first sword when he was nine years old, and he has been an avid collector ever since.He is a graduate of Hillsdale College in Michigan and holds master's and Ph.D. degrees from Florida State University.Since 1968, he has served as a professor at Southeastern Louisiana State University where he specializes in American military history, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.Groene is also the author of Antebellum Tallahassee: Memoir of Seaton Fleming: The Florida Troops in the Army of Northern Virginia, and Pike: A Fortress in the Wetlands.
