Groene is a member of the Peppers dance squad at South and teaches dance at a local studio.She's chair of her high school's National Honor Society, secretary of its Latin Club and is an intern at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina.

To be considered for the scholarship, Groene had to pass two rounds of judging that included prepared and impromptu speeches before a panel of WSU faculty.She also was required to write an essay.

The scholarship is awarded annually to a high school student with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and a minimum ACT score of 24.
